Jesus does not just-sort-of notice these two commandments. He said, “ALL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS HANG ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS.” (Mt 22:40)
FIRST: Love God with all your being.
We become like what we love. If you love The Good God, then you become a better person. If the God you love is a stronger, more bossy version of yourself, then guess what … ?
SECOND: Love your Neighbor(s) as yourself.
“Neighbor” includes random strangers who need help – includes even the one giving help.
If we dismiss Jesus’ teaching on this, we dismiss Jesus Himself.
